English review: Susan Ashton has been a leading light in the contemporary Christian music scene since her award-winning self-titled album was released in 1993; Closer is the adult contemporary vocalist's attempt at a country crossover hit. The Christian music community that once supported Ashton has typically shown disdain for artists who leave its cozy environs for the secular pop world, but fans of tasteful mainstream country will find much to like on Closer. Ashton has an admirable vocal range, an expressive gift for phrasing, and good taste when it comes to production (check the subtle cello-six-string intro to "Shot for the Moon" and the chiming 12-string guitars on "Come Out of the Rain.") When she tries to rock out, however ("Breathless"), or get bluesy ("Supernatural") the result is no more appealing than cereal-commercial music. Ashton is the spiritual and artistic progeny of the Boone clan, and her music is best when soft, slow, and sweet. Anything else is like white bread passing itself off as multigrain....
I thought Susan Ashton was one of the best country artists I'd ever heard when I first heard her 1995 album "So Far"-then I heard "Closer" and my opinion of her music went even higher. "Closer" blew me away. Every song on it- both the fast and slow songs-is fantastic, fun, and lighthearted. "Closer" is full of the joy in life and the faith in God that the songs on all of Ashton's previous albums are known for. "Our Little World" is a warm nostalgic ballad in which Ashton heartfeltly communicates the joy of loving your mate as the years go by and learning to appreciate/love them whether in good times or bad, something we Christians who are married all need to hear from time to time. The rocking bluesy songs "Supernatural" and "Breathless" are joyful spontaneous songs that are not only catchy/fun, but also make you want to kick your heels up and get spontaneous and playful with your special someone. This CD's music can put the joy and fun back in a relationship. And Ashton's firm faith in God, despite what some may say, is still evident on 'Closer' as it is on her previous albums. The joy and spontaneity in life, love, relationships, and the world is something all good Christian artists need to try to communicate-and from what I've just described about some of the songs here, it's very evident on 'Closer'. And the ballad 'Faith of the Heart' is a very powerful song in which Ashton sings her heart out about faith in God and standing her ground for what she believes in no matter what. That's a good message for every Christian to hear as well. And as on all her albums, the country music style that makes me like Ashton's music so much is in full force. She is a true country artist as well as true Christian artist so mainstream music listeners who are into country will love 'Closer' as well as her other work. Uno de los responsables de la renovación del country en los 80's, fusionando el country con el rock y el sonido ochentero, creando junto con principalmente el primer Steve Earle la senda que después seguirían con éxito otros artístas como Garth Brooks. Al contrario que Steve Earle, que ha vuelto a sonídos más tradicionales, Yoakam salvo alguna excepción sigue fiel al sonído que ayudó a crear.
Nacido el 23 de octubre de 1956 en Pikeville, Kentucky, Dwight Yoakam creció escuchando el sonido Honky Tonk de Bakersfield, delineado principalmente por su ídolo, Buck Owens y por Don Rich, Merle Haggard y Wynn Stewart. Amante también del Rockabilly, Yoakam se ha mostrado como un estupendo compositor que sabe aunar viejas tradiciones country con nuevos sonidos, sin necesidad de incluir sonidos pop en su música. Imprescindible en su carrera ha sido su productor, guitarrista -y sobre todo amigo- Pete Anderson. Juntos han sido definidos como los "Mick Jagger y Keith Richards" de la Música Country, aunque sin la rivalidad de los roqueros. Anderson le ha permitido a Yoakam una libertad creativa única, algo que muy pocos productores muestran hoy en día. Pero el Honky Tonk y el Rockabilly no han sido los únicos subgéneros del sonido country que Dwight ha encarado: desde Psychobilly hasta Lo-Fi, desde Western Swing hasta Bluegrass, desde Tex-Mex hasta Cajun, este nativo de Kentucky no le ha hecho asco ha nada y muchos de sus cds son verdaderas joyas que llevan al oyente de la mano en una recorrida por varios subestilos de la Música Country. También al igual que Willie y Emmylou, ha sabido rendir tributo a las glorias del pasado, haciendo que clásicos de otrora suenen frescos y puedan ser apreciados por oyentes del siglo XXI: Elvis, Bob Wills, Bill Monroe, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Roy Orbison y muchos más han sido versionados con la energía de un tipo que ama lo que escucha y lo que hace
Sus primeros díscos, "Guitars, cadillacs, etc." y "Hilbilly deluxe", pegaron alto desde el principio en las lístas country, gracias a canciones como "Bury me", "Honky tonk man" o "Guitars, Cadillacs". Como suele pasar en éstos casos Dwight alterna con éxito tanto canciones propias como buenas versiones; ha versioneado tanto a artístas clásicos country como al propio Elvis (con una curiosa y buena versión de "Suspicious minds" y "Little Sister" hasta al "I want you to want me" de "Cheap trick".
Es cierto que gran parte del éxito de su sonido se debe a Pete Anderson, complemento imprescindible en su carrera, un guitarrísta y productor que junto a su característica forma de tocar la guitarra solísta (técnica y sutil) y arreglos fué bastante importante para ayudar a Yoakam a encontrar su sonído. También en el trabajo gráfico de sus primeros álbumes se puede apreciar la caracterización de Yoakam como hilbilly-playboy, con un look de cowboy elegante y sofisticado que llevaría toda su carrera. Ésto unído a su característica voz y su acento sureño serán sus grandes señas de identidad.
Sacará díscos regularmente, de calidad media alta, que irá alternando con papeles de actor secundario en una cierta cantidad de películas, de las que destacaría como actor "La habitación del pánico" (que yó haya vísto) con Jodie Foster, llegando a dirigír, escribír y actuar en "South of heaven, west of hell", cuyas malas críticas no han ayudado mucho a continuar con su carrera en el cine. Como es normal, también escribió la banda sonora.
Cualquier dísco suyo es bueno para inciarse en la obra de éste intérprete del nuevo country, destacando su álbum acústico "dwightyoakamacoustic.net", donde regraba en formato acústico buena parte de sus "hits" (no es un dísco de refrítos, es un álbum de una calidad desbordante), díscos de estúdio recientes como "Tomorrow's sounds today" o "Blame the vain"o recopilatorios como "Reprise, please, baby" de su etapa en ése sello discográfico. Un artísta válido para iniciarse en el temído por múchos camíno del country-rock.

The warmth of her voice and her passionate elegance have seduced audiences who fall under the Spanish charm of her defiant pride. Born on the island of Majorca, introduced in Barcelona to Catalan musical traditions, and then hit by censorship under the Franco regime, Maria del Mar Bonet has since become the spokesperson for Mediterranean song. She began her first performances abroad in the early seventies in France, Denmark and England, and has visited the following countries during the course of her career: Switzerland, Venezuela, Mexico, Portugal, Poland, Italy, Sweden, Germany, Greece, Tunisia, Holland , Belgium, the former USSR and Japan. In 1981, she recorded Jardí Tancat in Paris with arrangements by Jacques Denjean in cooperation with Alan Stivell. In 1984, the French government awarded her the Charles Cross Academy Prize for the best foreign record edited in France. That same year she was awarded the Cross of San Jordi, the highest distinction of Catalunya. In 1985, as a result of her interest and research in North African music, she recorded Anells d’aigua with the Ensemble of Music Traditionelle di Tunis, and went on tour around France and Spain. A year later she toured Spain with the internationally famous Brazilian musician Milton Nascimiento offering an international blend of Mediterranean music and South American rhythyms. The tour was extended to Brazil the year after. She received the 1992 National Prize awarded by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Government) for popularizing Catalan folk music, and presented her new show The Greece of Theodorakis in Plaça del rei in Barcelona, after she recorded El las.
In July 2004, at the Festival Forum of Cultures in the Teatre Grec (Barcelona), Maria del Mar presented her latest work, Amic, Amat, with the excepcional collaboration of Cantiga Chorus and the Cham Ensemble from Damascus (Syria).
Amic, Amat was awarded the prestigious Music Ciutat de Barcelona award by Barcelona City Council. In September 2005 Maria del Mar Bonet also received the Medalla d’Or de Mallorca .
The international tour of Amic, Amat has visited the USA (Los Angeles, Seattle, Central Park in New York and Providence), Greece (Athens and Naxos) and the Azem Palace in Damascus (Syria), together with the Damascan musicians from the Cham Ensemble from Damascus. This concert was recorded live by the Catalan TV channel, TV3, for a special documentary to be shown at Christmas 2005.

Maria del Mar Bonet i Verdaguer (n. Palma de Mallorca, 27 de abril de 1947) es una cantautora española en lengua catalana, hermana del también cantautor Joan Ramon Bonet.
Estudió cerámica en la escuela de artes y oficios pero acabó dedicándose a la canción. Llegó a Barcelona en 1967, donde empezó a cantar con Els Setze Jutges y formó parte del movimiento de la Nova Cançó. Desde entonces ha editado discos de música folk en catalán a pesar de las restricciones durante la dictadura de Franco. Además ha realizado diversos conciertos en diferentes puntos de Europa, el Norte de África, Estados Unidos, Japón e Iberoamérica, además de participar en el campo de investigación de nuevas formas artísticas.
En 2007 fue galardonada con la Medalla de Honor del Parlamento de Cataluña en reconocimiento a su labor durante la etapa de Els Setze Jutges. En 2007 se edita su disco Terra secreta en el que hace un homenaje a algunos compañeros de la cançó que ya había presentado en directo desde 2006; en el mismo año presenta el espectáculo Els treballs i els dies junto al cantaor flamenco Miguel Poveda.
Ha colaborado con multitud de artistas de diferentes estilos, tanto en actuaciones en directo como en grabaciones discográficas, entre ellos Lluís Llach, Ovidi Montllor, Milton Nascimento, Nacho Duato, Manolo García, Martirio, Georges Moustaki, Amancio Prada, Miguel Poveda y Haris Alexiou.
